The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy: Better Than You Remember?
The Star Wars prequel trilogy remains controversial nearly 25 years after the release of Episode I: The Phantom Menace. It was one of the most anticipated movies of all time when it came out in May 1999. Still, fans were lately left cold by the kid-oriented entry, which had a lot of Trade Embargoes and Pod Racing but little in the way of the high adventure of the original films, even if people loved Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi and his climactic, Duel of the Fates, battle with Darth Maul. The sequel introduced Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker, and his performance and that of Natalie Portman as Padme were criticized, even if they did away with Jar-Jar Binks this time. Yet, the third entry, Revenge of the Sith, ended the trilogy on an appropriately dark note. What Happened to Darkwing Duck (1991-92)?
I love cartoons. Specifically cartoon series from the 80's and 90’s. Whenever someone asks me what my favorite childhood cartoon is, I always say there are two. The first is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the second is Darkwing Duck. I was the biggest fan of the masked mallard, and who wouldn't be? He was brave, smart, egotistical, and accident-prone but would persevere against evil. He had a killer costume and cool equipment to fight bad guys. He had an awesome rogue’s gallery that was a bit of a joke but also surprisingly formidable. The cartoon was also not afraid to show its love for classic superhero comics at a time when the general public didn't understand it. It even broke through the Iron Curtain at the height of the Cold War. But does this cartoon from the early 90's still hold up? Is it a silly animated series that is now a chore to watch, or is it still the incredible show I remember? WTF Happened to Troy?
If we’re talking about the best historical cinematic epics of all time, what are the first few titles that leap to mind? Kubrick’s Spartacus? Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia? Maybe Gibson’s Braveheart? Whatever the answer is, chances are, despite earning half a billion dollars worldwide, Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy isn’t likely the first movie that tops the list. But why is that? After all, Troy was not only a monumental box office hit, but it also fared pretty well among critics and general filmgoers alike. Moreover, with Homer’s timeless tale of The Iliad guiding the way, it would seem as though Troy would resonate longer in the public’s collective consciousness and rank among the all-time best and most durable biographical epics. Yet, despite the impressive size, scale, and scope of the big-screen spectacle that chronicles the intense war between the Greeks and the Trojan Army, Troy has sort of been forgotten at best and relegated towards the middle of the heap at worst, with titular star Brad Pitt himself voicing his own displeasure with the picture. Aside from Pitt’s own misgivings with the final outcome, we’re about to delve deep into the production history for Troy and document everything from the development phase and the casting process to the troubled intercontinental film shoot that was marred by inclement weather, destroyed sets, emergency relocation, injurious delays, tragic fatalities, on-set arrests, exploited background extras, and other unforeseen mishaps that led to Troy becoming one of the most expensive Hollywood movies in history. If you're a nineties kid like me, you might recall Eye See You as that Stallone film tucked away in the later part of his career, discovered on Blockbuster or Hollywood Video shelves. Sly, pointing a gun in a snowy scene, seemed as surprised as you were to find it there with little fanfare. Stallone deserves a spot on the video store's "Guaranteed in-stock or free rental" wall, or at least a role in an ensemble cast like he had in Cop Land a few years earlier. Surprisingly, Eye See You featured an all-star cast, although it ended up shelved with other direct-to-video titles. WTF Happened to L.A. Confidential?
The year 1990 saw the release of James Ellroy’s sweeping crime novel L.A. Confidential, which Ellroy wanted to be the most epic book about L.A. ever written. In his own eyes, the author accomplished that goal, calling his own work a “masterpiece” and one he did not envision making the transition to the big screen. Not that he really cared; Ellroy was always vocal about his disinterest in seeing his books adapted into movies, as he wasn’t particularly interested in the medium. But there was a kindred spirit who similarly loved the City of Angels, and who wanted to tell a very big story about the place where he grew up. Curtis Hanson had been a director of adequate thrillers like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and The River Wild, but he was searching for a project that would allow him to tell a grand-scale story about Los Angeles. Already a fan of Ellroy’s material, Hanson connected with L.A. Confidential, the third book in what’s now known as Ellroy’s L.A. Quartet. Filled with murder, drugs, police corruption, prostitutes, and Hollywood stars, the epic story had all the elements of the edgy 1940s and 50s film noirs and detective stories that Hanson admired. But it wasn’t exactly commercial. Could such a gritty, plot-heavy tale translate to the big screen? Furthermore, would anyone want to see it? The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ranking Batman's Intros in the Nolan Films

WTF Happened to JAMES FRANCO?
For most performers, building up a resume of over 150 projects is something that takes an entire lifetime to achieve, but for James Franco that is a feat he has accomplished at just 45 years old. This Freaky Geek was catapulted to fame in one of biggest comic book franchises of all time before settling in to his role as a performer who can take on any genre and any film no matter how big or small. But with a tremendous rise at such a young age, sometimes you don’t make the best decisions. For Franco, those bad decisions would come to light on the very night of his greatest professional achievement and begin a downfall that is sadly all to common in today’s world. At one point putting out up to 12 projects a year, Franco has taken a backseat as allegations against him began to pile up. WTF Happened to Highlander 3: The Final Dimension?
When Connor MacLeod says "There Can Be Only One" in the original Highlander, he had no idea he'd be repeating that line for years. Just when he thinks he has finally made it to be the only one, another immortal seems to pop up, challenging him for that title. How many "ones" can there be? It turns out a lot. After the problems with making Highlander II and the anemic box office for it it was decided to completely ignore everything surrounding that film and create a direct sequel to the original film. They dropped any mention of the planet Zeist, ignored that immortals are supposed to be aliens, and reverted the setting to seven years after the first film. Even under the best of circumstances, films are hard to produce. How does one fare after completely rebooting the franchise? Surprisingly well. The creation of Highlander: The Final Dimension (aka Highlander 3: The Sorcerer) is far from perfect, but after the debacle of creating the second film, surely nothing crazy could happen the third time out, right?
